Framed preserved specimens are legal to buy/sell in the US (no permits needed for dead insects). Live eggs may have state restrictions (e.g., some require permits for non-native or regulated species)—we comply with USDA/USFWS rules and ship only to allowed areas.
We are based out of New Jersey, USA. If you intend to purchase livestock via our shop, we ask that you please acquire a PPQ-526 permit from the US Department of Agriculture if you are purchasing from another state. Transporting live organisms is subject to local and federal laws. -
No, not at this time, we are only shipping framed specimens and our live eggs within the United States.
This is especially true when it comes to live eggs. Only certain states qualify to receive egg shipments. This is expanded upon further in other parts of our FAQ.
-
Yes! All specimens are genuine, naturally deceased butterflies and moths that have been preserved, pinned, and framed by hand. We do not sell fakes, replicas, or plastic models.
-
With proper care (avoid direct sunlight, high humidity, extreme temperatures), they can last decades. Display in a dry, stable environment; dust gently with a soft brush if needed. No special chemicals required.
The shadow boxes are not completely sealed shut to allow for ease of specimen removal. If buyers so desire, the frames can be sealed, but we recommend the buyer does so at their own discretion.
General tips:
-Avoid high-VOC/oil-based caulks, superglue/epoxy near the specimen (fumes can fog glass or embrittle wings).-Skip permanent seals if you might want to access later (e.g., reposition specimen)—hot glue or tape is easier to reverse than silicone.
-Don't over-seal airtight unless necessary—many collectors keep frames in stable rooms (40–50% humidity, low light) without extra sealing, and specimens last decades.
-
Yes! While it is wise to familiarize yourself ahead of time, there will always be a general care guide to caring for your livestock. We will ensure they arrive to you safely and that you have the guidance you need to move forward with clarity and confidence.

Our preserved specimens - if not captive bred on-site in our indoor enclosure - are ethically sourced from reputable and sustainable suppliers. We do not support the wild collection of protected species or habitat-damaging practices.
-
Yes—we prioritize ethical sourcing and only using organisms that have lived out their natural lifespan and died of natural causes. The vast majority of our shop consists of captive-bred organisms, no CITES-protected species without proper documentation. Buying from sustainable suppliers supports habitat protection and reduces pressure on wild populations. We can’t emphasize enough, no organisms are killed specifically for our products.
-
Our 10 × 10” shadow boxes are made exclusively with 1 × 5” pine wood, and use water-based stains and finishes emit far fewer VOCs, and dry much faster. They have minimal odor or fumes once hardened. They are also widely recommended for sensitive applications.
We otherwise use UV resistant plexiglass to prevent fading, and acid-free materials within the frame as to not damage the integrity of our specimens. All frames will come mounted with D-ring hardware to wall mount with ease. Any decorative elements inside the frame do not harm the integrity of the specimen. -
Do not release captive-reared organisms into the wild unless they are native to your exact location and released at the right time/season (risk of genetic disruption or disease). Best to observe, photograph, or release only in controlled/approved ways in accordance with your applicable laws.
